Our story is much the same as so many others. It began from a place of humble beginnings. My mother and father divorced when we were small children. My mother remained single until I was a teenage girl. She always poured into my sister and I as we grew up. We were lacking in areas but had no idea that we were, due to the amazing love that was shown to us through our dear mother. My mother, Estelle, spent countless hours with an elderly cousin, (Pauline), unknowingly, she would become a very intricate part of my life. Cousin Pauline was a “jack of all trades.” She was determined to teach me how to do something. One day it happened! She called me into the kitchen and taught me how to bake a cake. I started baking cakes just about every day, as I laugh to myself. I experimented on relatives, friends, neighbors, and mainly my baby sister, Stacie. Finally, I had found my passion.
Years later I became a single mother. My son, Shaunte, who is now part owner in the business, is my pride and joy. He had huge locks of curly hair and beautiful brown eyes. He became affectionately known as “Ma’s Cake.” That was the name I gave him early as a child. When Shaunte was just a little boy, I became reacquainted with someone from my childhood. That someone eventually became my husband of today, the love of my life, Charles R. Walker. I had been baking for years and one day my husband’s sister, Judy, wanted me to try a piece of cake that she had. I fell in love with that slice of cake. I inquired about the recipe, got the recipe, worked on it and it soon became the “Lemon Delight.” This cake became my go to for any function, from my son’s school or any event, and the people loved it.
As time went on, my husband decided to open a diner. The diner was called, “PGF Diner.” Put God First, is what it stood for. We needed a dessert, so the lemon delight was added to the menu. It soon became one of the staples of the menu. Eventually, he had to answer a higher calling. The diner soon closed but the cakes were still being baked over the years. My husband has always been a businessman. He would often say something to let me know that my cakes were more than a hobby. I began adding other cakes and many more flavors to sell.
One day while actually trying to put a business plan together, Teresa stated, “Ma, why don’t you name the business, Ma’s Cakes?” She then went on to say, “everybody already calls you “Ma”, and Shaunte is called “Ma’s Cake”, that would be a great name for your business.”So this is how the name was originated. My husband started becoming more interested in my “hobby” at the time. After numerous bake sales and attending events, my husband went and purchased a cake truck. The truck was beautifully decorated with my business bitmoji and the different flavors of my cakes. I then began delivering cakes myself along with my husband and son to many local businesses and surrounding cities. One of our former radio announcers by the name of Jessica Griffith, now married, Jessica S Turner, was the inventor of, “chasing the truck.”
Charles believed in the cake business so much so that our home, formerly as our cottage, soon became the cake shop. Laughing within myself. The kitchen was remodeled and licensed as a bakery. We worked diligently there until we outgrew our home bakery and finally moved to our new cake home, 318 Main St. God works in mysterious ways I always say. Who would have known, my love for elderly people and willingness to learn something? My aunt Pauline who took the time to teach me. The affectionate nickname of my son. Someone payingclose enough attention to the name that they would suggest would become what is now, “Ma’s Cakes!” I may be the face of the business, but there is no way I could have done any of this without my husband, son, grandson, and a few others who continuously push us forward. For instance, our godson, Trey Totten, who works effortlessly to help make the dream a reality.
The name, Ma’s Cakes, says it all! It is about what you love and whom you love. So, I guess one can say, Ma’s Cakes was truly made from scratch with a whole lot of love and a super great cake family. To God be the Glory! Stay tuned!
